Making the best use of the earths resources
Minimising environmental impact
As businesses, individuals and as part of wider society, everything we do and the choices we make affect the environment in some way, it's unavoidable. We live in a finite world with finite resources and the environment has only a finite ability to absorb our waste products. At Nadarra Candles we make products using materials and processes that minimise the environmental impact of our products during production, use and throughout the complete life cycle of the candle.
βWhat we are doing for sustainability:
Choice of wax:
For our container candles we chose Rapeseed and Coconut wax for its environmental sustainability benefits compared to paraffin wax, which as it is derived from fossil fuels is ultimately not sustainable in the long term.
For our pillar wax candles Olive wax was chosen because it proved to be superior to Rapeseed pillar wax in itβs ability to resist cracking when used in large diameter pillar candles which was found to be an issue in burn testing.
Soy wax was considered but the growth in the global soya bean market has resulted in deforestation in some parts of the world, despite the industry trying to address the issue with various Soya Certification schemes which ideally would guarantee that should no deforestation was associated with these certified products, although in practice this has not been fully realised.
Tins vs glass containers:
We chose tins for our fragranced candles for few reasons.
Less shipping weight, less energy use and carbon emissions from transportation and reduced transit potential during postage.
Less energy used in manufacture vs glass containers (Tin plated steel, around 1/4 vs glass container)
Tins are less prone to damage in the home and have no prospect of shattering due to repeated heating and cooling cycles that would be encountered using glass repeatedly as a refillable container.
